Welcome to Deputy Doug’s Dispatches

Hello everyone, and welcome to my new blog, Deputy Doug’s Dispatches! I’m excited to share my journey, thoughts, and stories with you. As a 100% service-connected veteran with Parkinson’s, I have a unique perspective on life, and I hope to create a space where we can explore various interests together.

A Journey Through Kansas City

Kansas City holds a special place in my heart. From its rich history to its vibrant culture, there’s always something new to discover. One of my favorite spots is the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library and Museum. Truman’s legacy is a powerful reminder of how humble beginnings can lead to great achievements.

Another gem is the Vaile Mansion in Independence, MO. Built in 1881 by Colonel Harvey Vaile, this stunning example of Second Empire architecture boasts 31 rooms, nine marble fireplaces, and a 48,000-gallon wine cellar. It’s a testament to the opulence of the Gilded Age and a must-visit for history enthusiasts.

The Magic of Music and Baseball

Music and baseball are two of my greatest passions. Kansas City’s jazz scene is legendary, with roots that run deep in the 18th and Vine District. This area is also home to the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, a place that celebrates the incredible contributions of African American baseball players.

I’ve been playing the harmonica since I was 18, starting from my early Marine Corps days. The harmonica has been a constant companion, adding a musical backdrop to my life’s journey. Speaking of music, the famous song “Kansas City” by Wilbert Harrison immortalizes the intersection of 12th Street and Vine. Although the current intersection no longer exists, the city has commemorated it with a park and a street sign, celebrating its place in musical history.

Road Trip Dreams

I’ve always dreamed of taking a road trip across the country, exploring new places and meeting new people. During my Marine Corps days, I had the opportunity to travel and get my kicks on route sixty-six all the way to the Pacific Ocean, navigating the Smoky Mountains, and reaching the Atlantic. These experiences have fueled my desire to continue exploring. As a veteran, I have access to some great benefits that can make this journey even more affordable and enjoyable.

Starting This Blog

Starting this blog is a new adventure for me. I want to create a space where I can share my experiences, connect with others, and maybe even inspire a few of you to embark on your own journeys. Whether it’s through stories of the past, reflections on the present, or dreams for the future, I hope you’ll join me on this ride.

Looking Ahead

In the coming posts, I’ll be diving deeper into the history of Kansas City, sharing my favorite baseball memories, and planning out that dream road trip. I’ll also be exploring the benefits available to veterans and how they can make travel and exploration more accessible.

Thank you for joining me on this new adventure!
